2. The most common types of oil seals are rubber-cased and metal-cased.
NBR, also known as nitrile rubber or nitrile, is the most popular material for an oil seal because of its good resistance to many oils and greases, such as mineral grease and hydraulic oil. Depending on their composition, synthetic oils and greases, such as those based on glycol, can damage NBR rubber materials. Depending on the amount of glycol, a PTFE lip seal may be the best choice. NBR is also unable to cope with contact with acids and solvents. The rubber is suitable for oil and grease at temperatures from -35 °C to 100 °C.
Oil seals, often called a rotary shaft seal or grease seal, closes the gap between stationary and moving components in mechanical equipment — most often rotating shafts — helping prevent lubricant escape and stopping harmful materials, such as dirt, from moving in through the clearance. Oil seals are most commonly used in gearboxes, hydraulic cylinders, and related components.

The interaction of the integrated seals with the shaft follows the dynamics of the PTFE seals. Often an additional dust seal (rubber lip or felt strip) provides an effective barrier against contaminating particles.

Oil seals come cataloged as metric oil seals or imperial sized oil seals. The seals can also be custom-made to match the bearings in new types of machinery. They are installed in practically every type of machine including vehicles, protecting all kinds of precision, precisely-fitted ball bearings, sleeve bearings, and roller bearings.
One of the main principles of power transmission is consistent lubrication. Shaft seals play a hugely important role in this. Imagine a situation involving a shaft-mount reducer – electric motor prime mover, driven by belts, motion controlled by a torque arm – with an improperly seated seal. A blown-out input shaft seal is a nightmare situation, necessitating an entire breakdown and reassembly, not to mention re-aligning and re-tensioning the belts.

What is Oil Seal

Oil seals increasingly had to meet higher requirements, which is why PTFE was developed in 1980. This variant can better withstand higher engine speeds, higher oil temperatures, longer oil intervals and modern lubricants. In addition, the oil seal contains a wider contact surface, which ensures less wear.
