CSPI says it might reconsider its rating if specifications for food-grade titanium dioxide in the U.S. are updated to ensure nanoparticles are minimized, and new studies are conducted to assess its capacity to cause cancer or other health problems.

In 1970, Japanese scholars studied the phase diagram of iron oxide microcrystalline formation, which laid a theoretical foundation for the preparation method of iron oxide yellow crystal seed. According to the research results, iron yellow crystal seeds can be formed under acidic or alkaline conditions. Because iron yellow is a crystal structure, in order to crystallize into pigment particles, it must first form crystal nucleus and become crystal seed, and then the crystal nucleus grows into iron yellow. Though the regulated use of titanium dioxide in food products is legal in the U.S. and Canada, it's banned in some other countries, notably throughout Europe. In May 2021, the European Food Safety Authority announced that titanium dioxide can no longer be considered safe as a food additive.

Aside from its use in paints, coatings, plastics, and paper, TiO2 is also utilized in a variety of other industrial applications. It is commonly found in cosmetics, sunscreens, and food products, where it serves as a safe and effective whitening agent. TiO2 is also used in the production of ceramics, glass, and textiles, where it enhances their appearance, durability, and resistance to fading.

Manufacturers use titanium dioxide in some packaging to protect food from exposure to sunlight. Lab studies show it may also help stop bacteria from growing, and break down a gas that makes many fruits and vegetables ripen faster. That can keep products fresher and give them a longer shelf life.

The effects of TiO₂ NPs in plants

The element titanium and the compound TiO₂ are found around the world, linked to other elements such as iron, in several kinds of rock and mineral sands (including a component of some beach sands). Titanium most commonly occurs as the mineral ilmenite (a titanium-iron oxide mineral) and sometimes as the mineral rutile, a form of TiO₂. These inert molecular compounds must be separated through a chemical process to create pure TiO2.

In a study published in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology in 2020, researchers examined the effects of food additives titanium dioxide and silica on the intestinal tract by grouping and feeding mice three different food-grade particles — micro-TiO2, nano-TiO2, and nano-SiO2.  With all three groups, researchers observed changes in the gut microbiota, particularly mucus-associated bacteria. Furthermore, all three groups experienced inflammatory damage to the intestine, but the nano-TiO2 displayed the most pronounced changes. The researchers wrote: “Our results suggest that the toxic effects on the intestine were due to reduced intestinal mucus barrier function and an increase in metabolite lipopolysaccharides which activated the expression of inflammatory factors downstream. In mice exposed to nano-TiO2, the intestinal PKC/TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway was activated. These findings will raise awareness of toxicities associated with the use of food-grade TiO2 and SiO2.”
